Cruise ship season is back

The B.C. tourist season officially kicked off today with the arrival of the first cruise ship of the season in Victoria on Tuesday.

The cruise ship industry brings big dollars and jobs to the province of B.C.

CTV News is reporting the Celebrity Eclipse cruise ship made a pit-stop on route from Seattle to Vancouver but is the first of many more to dock at the Ogden Point cruise ship terminal.

More than 250 cruise ships are expected over between April and next fall, that number is up by 15 compared to last year. The number of  passengers is also expected to rise by almost 60,000 over last year as well.

"It's the start of our largest season yet," said Lindsay Gaunt, director of cruise development for the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority.

"We project over $130 million of economic benefit to the region for the season," Gaunt said.
