RCMP are providing more details on a collision in Coquitlam, Monday, in which a child was killed.

Just before 3 p.m., a Dodge Charger and BMW sedan collided at the intersection of Mariner Way and Riverview Crescent.

The southbound Dodge was intending to turn left onto Riverview when it collided with the northbound BMW, sending the BMW spinning onto a raised traffic island where five children were standing, ranging in age from six to 17.

A 13-year-old girl and six-year-old boy were taken to hospital with serious injuries. Soon after arriving at the hospital, the girl succumbed to her injures.

Both drivers are co-operating with police, and impairment and distraction do not appear to be factors.

Both vehicles have been seized for further investigation. 

The road was shut down until just before midnight as police investigated.
