Mom guilty of murder

A Surrey woman has been found guilty of second-degree murder in the death of her own daughter, CTV News reports.

Eight-year-old Teagan Batstone was found dead in the back of a car in South Surrey on Dec. 10, 2014.

During her trial, the Crown said Lisa Batstone smothered the child.

The murder was motivated in part by resentment towards her ex-husband, the Crown alleged.

The defence sought a finding of manslaughter, arguing Batstone's mental state could have been affected by stress and mental disorders, as well as alcohol and prescription drugs.

In a police interview, Batstone told officers she wanted her daughter “to sleep with Jesus," and that she smothered her while she was sleeping.

A second-degree murder conviction carries an automatic life sentence.
