Bank robberies linked: cops

RCMP say a number of recent armed bank robberies across Kelowna are linked.

After uncovering links between the robberies, police have charged William Gordon Martens, 58, of Kelowna with three counts of robbery.

Martens has also been charged with disguising face with intent to commit an offence and using imitation firearm while committing an indictable offence during the most recent robbery.

On Saturday shortly after 8 a.m., RCMP responded to a robbery in-progress at the TD Canada Trust on Harvey Avenue in Kelowna.

"Our front line officers spotted the suspect alone inside a motor vehicle travelling in the area of Springfield Road and Hollywood Road South," says Cpl. Jesse O'Donaghey.

"Those officers conducted a high-risk traffic stop with the black Dodge Neon and managed to take that suspect into police custody without incident."

Investigators then linked the suspect with the robbery of the Rutland Scotiabank committed on Jan. 31 and the robbery of the Mission branch of the Royal Bank on March 1.
