6 years jail for crime spree

One of the men who robbed a West Kelowna hunting store and set fire to a West Kelowna home was sentenced to another three years in jail Wednesday.

David Huck pleaded guilty Wednesday to robbery, arson and using an imitation firearm during a robbery, on the day his two-week hearing was set to begin, which was to be followed by a four-week jury trial.

Huck was one of two men who entered the Antler Creek Outfitters on March 28, 2017 and made off with 18 guns.

At about 3:30 p.m., the two men entered the store and Huck's accomplice pointed what appeared to be a gun at the store's owner, Larry Wilkins, while Huck stuffed the 10 revolvers and eight semi-automatic pistols into a duffle bag. The stolen weapons totalled more than $13,000.

Huck was arrested several months later on June 2. Police learned that his accomplice had later died.

Two days prior to the robbery, Huck was involved in the arson of a home at West Kelowna's 1191 Peak Point Drive, where he smashed two windows of the unoccupied home and threw a jerry can full of gasoline into the home's foyer. He lit the gas and fled the scene.

A suspicious fire occurred at the same home less than two weeks later.

Huck has been in custody since his arrest, after he was denied bail on three separate occasions.

During sentencing submissions, Crown prosecutor Colin Forsyth asked for a total sentence of six years for the three convictions, minus the 902 days he received for enhanced presentence custody. Defence had sought a sentence closer to 4.5 years, which would have given him just under two years left to serve, allowing him to serve in a provincial institution.

Instead, Justice Alison Beames handed down a five-year sentence, leaving Huck with about three years left on his sentence that will be served in a federal institution.

He was also ordered to pay the owner of Antler Creek Outfitters $1,000 in restitution, the cost of his insurance's deductible for the stolen guns.
