Nothing goes to waste

The idea is simple: the less waste that is used the better it is for the environment.

And to keep as much plastic out of the landfill as possible, Farm Bound Organics has launched its zero waste initiative.

Jaye Coward, Farm Bound owner, said the zero waste initiative started in Europe and is spreading across North America “like wildfire.”

Instead of people putting produce, nuts and even laundry detergent in single-use containers, they bring their own reusable containers to put the items in.

The containers are weighed empty and full to know how much product the customer has received.

“The whole store in Kelowna and part of the one in Vernon will be entirely without packaging,” said Coward, adding unexpected set backs delayed the opening of the Kelowna store, but it is expected to be open soon.

“It's really important at Farm Bound, we really want to promote environmental sustainability, we want people to buy local and support their local farmers and to reduce their environmental impact,” she said. “We're hoping to be fully set up in the next couple of weeks.”

The warehouse, at 1935 11th Ave. next to Crossfit Vernon, is open to the public Thursdays from noon to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
