What's next for racetrack?

The legal wrangling is over and the long-simmering dispute has come to an end, so now the question is what to do with the Kin Race Track land.

On Thursday, it was announced the Okanagan Equestrian Society has given up its fight with the city, giving control of the land to the regional district.

Vernon Mayor Victor Cumming said the regional district will now transfer the land to the city, which will then decide how best to use the prime piece of real estate.

“There will be a parks planning process to say, 'OK, now that we have this land, what are the highest and best uses for it?'” said Cumming. “At this point all of the discussions have been about parks and recreation use of the land, but that's a decision that will be made by council.”

Cumming said every session he has been involved in, or read about over the past decade, is to use the land for parks and recreation facilities linked to Kal Tire Place.

“I think it would be a tremendous recreation area for the city and the regional district,” he said.

Cumming said the location would also make it ideal for a large sporting facility as it is close to amenities and accommodations.

And it may not even take very long before concrete ideas are formed.

“I would think there are a number of plans that have been done over time that will get reviewed, so I think this will be a quicker process than is often experienced when the city gains large parcels like this,” he said.

While the city works on exactly what to do with the land, Cumming expects in the meantime it will continued to be used for its ball diamonds.
