Mayor on Costco move

Kelowna Mayor Colin Basran has weighed in on the prospect of Costco relocating to property on Westbank First Nation lands on the Westside.

Basran was responding to a story published on Castanet Wednesday, suggesting the retail giant will move across the lake after leasing property on Westside Road just north of Highway 97.

“With our ongoing dialogue with Costco, the report comes as a surprise to us,” said Mayor Basran.

“We have been in regular discussions with Costco; asking that they consider sites in Kelowna to address their relocation needs. Staff continue to work with Costco exploring options that would allow them to remain in Kelowna.

“We believe there are options in our city that could meet Costco’s needs, but in the end, Costco will make a business decision that works for them.

“The City of Kelowna and council value the business, employees and their members in the community.

“We look forward to continue working with Costco to address their business need and the needs of their members in Kelowna.”

Costco has outgrown its current location and has been looking for a new site for several years.

The company is hoping to find a site that will allow for more square footage, more parking, and a gas bar.
