Plastic ban on the horizon?

Could plastic straws and bags be a thing of the past in the Central Okanagan?

While Central Okanagan communities have not yet publicly stated an intention to investigate a plastics ban, that could be about to change.

Regional District of Central Okanagan corporate communications director Jodie Foster says it is on their radar.

"Some of the members of the (regional) board have expressed some interest in looking into it," said Foster.

"We'll be reviewing this project this year as part of the budget process."

The board's first chance to debate whether to investigate a ban on single-use plastics will come when the budget process begins Feb. 21.

If the board gives its support, the district would begin the process of looking into what a ban would look like.

Other communities in B.C. and worldwide have either banned the use outright or have begun the process.

Victoria and Salmon Arm have moved to ban single-use plastics, while the Regional District of North Okanagan announced Monday it is exploring a similar bylaw.
