Wind and snow in forecast

It's going to get windy and white on the Coquihalla tonight.

Environment Canada issued a weather statement Friday morning, warning of gusting winds as strong as 90 km/h across the Okanagan and heavy snow on the Coquihalla Highway.

The strongest winds are expected to be seen on the Coquihalla and Okanagan Connector, while up to 15 centimetres is expected to fall on the Coquihalla.

“Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve,” the statement says. “Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow. Poor weather conditions may contribute to transportation delays.”

While the heavy snow is just forecast for the Coquihalla, winds are expected to hit all across the Okanagan.

“Motorists travelling on the adjacent highway passes are advised to be prepared for strong wind gusts, especially in wind-prone areas,” the statement says.

Both the wind and snow are expected to taper off by Saturday morning.

The high wind is expected to hit the coast as well today.

"Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur. Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage," Environment Canada warns.
