Victim bound, sex assaulted

Police in the Kootenays are investigating a horrifying and possibly random sexual assault and forcible confinement.

Creston RCMP were contacted at about 11 p.m. Tuesday by the East Kootenay Regional Hospital for a report of a sexual assault victim.

The 47-year-old Creston woman told police she was transferring items from her vehicle into her home at about 7 p.m. that day while parked in the alley behind her home on the 1100 Block of Hillside Drive in Creston.

She was accosted from behind by an unknown assailant and forced into her vehicle.

“The suspect covered the woman’s head with what appeared to be bags, and bound her hands and feet with tape,” said Cpl. Dan Moskaluk. “The suspect then drove the woman’s vehicle, a 2008 Grey Pontiac Wave hatchback away, with her in it.”

The suspect drove the victim east out of Creston and Highway 3, at one point stopping to sexually assault her.

Once the vehicle approached Cranbrook, the suspect stopped and fled on foot. The victim freed herself from the restraints and drove herself to Cranbrook where she received help.

Police are seeking any possible witnesses who may have seen something at the woman’s home or along the route; contact the Creston RCMP at 250-428-9313 or via Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
