Alleged shooter on the loose

The man on bail for a fatal shooting at a Penticton apartment complex last year is now being hunted by police.

An unendorsed warrant was issued Wednesday morning for the arrest of 37-year-old Sylvain Demers after he failed to show up for court.

Demers is facing one count of manslaughter using a firearm in the shooting death of Randall Toews on April 26, 2017.

While Demers was arrested immediately after the incident, he was released and was not charged until Oct. 26, 2018. He was granted bail on Oct. 29 under conditions to not contact any Crown witnesses or possess firearms.

The reasons for the bail decision are covered under a standard publication ban.

Both Demers and Toews have lengthy criminal records.

Neighbours told Castanet right before the shooting they heard loud banging and yelling, “I know you're in here,” prior to a gunshot.

Toews stumbled down the steps and died in the parking lot of the building at 998 Creston Avenue.
