Mayor visits My Place

Vernon's new mayor went online to talk about a low-income apartment complex that should be ready next year.

The 52-bachelor suite apartment called My Place, is under construction in downtown Vernon and will be operated by Turning Points Collaborative Society.

“As we all know, homing those that need shelter is a critical part of what Vernon needs to do for people, particularly those who are truly homeless,” said Cumming in the video that was posted to the City of Vernon – Activate Life Facebook page.

To get a room in My Place, applicants will go through a screening process.

“Once that is complete, they will end up with a place to live and a way to have their own community and a community with others. Creating a community becomes a critical component to this,” said Cumming. “There will be supports, not just a place for them to live.”

My Place is expected to be complete by late March or early April.

A new temporary shelter, Our Place, is expected to open at the end of January, beginning of February.

Our place will provide short-term shelter for area homeless, while My Place has longer-term placement.

BC Housing is paying the lion's share for both projects.
