Tap water deemed unsafe

The tiny Similkameen community of Hedley is being warned to not consume local tap water after elevated levels of coliforms were detected last week.

The “do not consume” notice means the water cannot be made safe by boiling it. Bottled water should be used for all cooking, drinking, brushing of teeth and other consumption activities.

A test Dec. 4 at the Hedley pump house found coliform levels of 260 CFU per 100 millilitres. For context, a test at the same location Nov. 6 found less than one CFU.

The notice impacts everyone under the Hedley Improvement District Water System, which is well under 500 people. Its expected residents will be without water for most of the week while more tests are conducted.
