Clear of future spec tax?

Investors looking for property in Lake Country can relax – at least for now.

The provincial government has no plans to include the Kelowna bedroom community in its Speculation and Vacancy Tax.

That after Kelowna-Lake Country MLA Norm Letnick pressed the finance minister during committee meetings on the tax Monday evening in the legislature.

Letnick asked Carole James specifically about the possibility of including Lake Country at some point in the future.

"Our interpretation of what she said is she clearly told British Columbians that outside of the currently targeted municipalities, including Kelowna, West Kelowna, Nanaimo and others, there will be no additional municipalities added to the list in the future," Letnick told Castanet.

"That's the language we believe she told us."

However, in a review of the transcript and the actual discussion, James seems to leave the door open for future expansion of the tax.

"There will be opportunities to be able to review that as we meet with the mayors and councils, but the areas that are there are the areas that will remain," said James.

"We're not looking at expanding it. We need to ensure that we implement the tax, that we monitor it and that we see it as we go along."

Letnick says another piece of the legislation, which gives the minister the power to expand the tax, will be up for discussion later today.

"We will press her on that piece to ask her why she needs the ability to include other jurisdictions into the spec tax ... if there were not going to by any other jurisdictions added."
