More security for council

You'll notice more security measures in Kelowna city council chambers.

During the five-week break between meetings, the city had staff erect a few additional security measures to protect councillors and staff.

A half-wall was erected between the gallery and the staff presentation table, a similar sized wall and gate were placed along the right wall and security barriers in front of the council well.

City clerk Stephen Fleming said a few recent event had caused council to voice some concern over safety.

The most recent, and disruptive incident took place in mid August when a homeless man who identified himself as Daniel dumped the contents of his backpack on the chambers' floor.

He claimed some of the items may have been crystal meth.

Mayor Colin Basran called a halt to proceedings while bylaw officers dealt with the situation. It's the first time in recent memory a meeting had to be paused to deal with a disturbance.
