Getting ready for Christmas

Madison Erhardt

It's that time of year when people start getting a little jingle in their step.

And that means decorating for Christmas.

Big trends this season include pre-lit trees, outdoor ambience displays, such as inflatable and wire-form figures, along with old standbys.

John Gilbert, general manager at Canadian Tire in Kelowna, says Christmas lights are typically the first thing to start selling in large quantities.

"People usually set them up right after Remembrance Day," said Gilbert.

And, unless you're the procrastinating type, it's much easier to get up the ladder and hang those lights now, before the snow flies and temperatures plunge. Also making the job easier, new style string lights that have the clips built right in.

The hot colour of the year, as chosen by Canadian Tire, is rose.

Along with Christmas decorating comes Christmas shopping.

"Christmas trees, to toys, to decorations, to your winter fun activities," said Gilbert.

Home safety in icy conditions is also key.

Store owner Keith Gostlin says: "One of the newest innovations that I love is they have come up with ice melting products that are eco-friendly. They are also safe for anyone that has pets."

Kelowna resident Scott McMillan says he frequents Canadian Tire a little too much, according to his wife.

"She tries to keep me away from here because it's got everything. We ... find all the items on our list right here," he said.
