Metro Vancouver mayors have voted to suspend construction on a light rapid transit line in Surrey.

Instead, they'll move toward a SkyTrain to Langley, it was decided Thursday.

But, Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum faced some stiff opposition to the about-face.

“I think this approach is setting a dangerous precedent,” Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie said. “I’m open to the idea of making a change, and we need a full analysis of that change."

“The quickest way forward is not to throw a bomb into this. But that bomb has been cast," added Maria Harris of Electoral Area A, which includes the University of British Columbia campus. 

An analysis of the costs and route for a SkyTrain from King George Station to downtown Langley has yet to be calculated.

“What became clear is that there are a lot of questions, and this is a significant change of direction and we don’t have a lot of answers yet,” said New Westminster Mayor Jonathan Cote.

The mayors ultimately agreed to McCallum’s campaign promise to scrap the $1.65-billion LRT.

TransLink estimates the SkyTrain option would cost an additional $1 billion and that $77 million has been spent on the LRT already.
