Warriors beef up back end

The West Kelowna Warriors and Vernon Vipers have completed a two-player deal.

The Warriors acquired 18-year-old defenceman Austin Chorney from the Vipers Tuesday, in exchange for 19-year-old forward Matt Kowalski.

In portions of four seasons with Chilliwack, Salmon Arm and Vernon, Chorney had 10 goals, 23 assists and 93 penalty minutes in 124 games.

In 17 games with the Vipers this season, Chorney has a goal and two assists.

“By acquiring Austin Chorney, we believe our defence core is now more well-rounded and we, as a team, are better prepared to win in the playoffs,” said Warriors head coach and GM Geoff Grimwood.

“Austin is a player our staff has been keen on for quite a while and we are excited to be able to acquire a player of his caliber.”

Kowalski, a native of Vernon, was in his second season with the Warriors. In 43 games with the Warriors, he had 12 goals and 15 assists.

He has five goals and eight assists in 19 games this season.

“It’s never easy to trade a player like Matt Kowalski with the speed and skill he possesses,” said Grimwood.

“But in order to acquire a player like Austin Chorney, we had to part with a player that matches the value to the team he is on.”

Chorney is expected to make his Warriors debut Wednesday when they play in Penticton in the back half of a home-and-home.

Kowalski will return to Royal LePage Place with his new team Friday.
