Grave site vandalized

An Indigenous grave site on Vancouver Island was recently vandalized with racist graffiti.

The vandalism at the Qualicum First Nation graveyard was discovered last week and a faceplate that had been mounted on granite was stolen.

Tanna Weir posted to Facebook on Nov. 9 about the vandalism.

“A faceplate off one our loved one's final resting place was stolen,” Wier wrote. “We would very much like the faceplate returned to its proper place.”

In the place of the stolen faceplate, a racist slur against Indigenous people was spray-painted.

Michael Recalma, chief of the Qualicum First Nation, told CTV News that each granite stone is in memory of a person who had died from the Qualicum First Nation.

Oceanside RCMP is investigating the vandalism, which has since been removed.
