Dangerous pranks on hwy

Alanna Kelly

Two vehicles were hit by objects while driving along Highway 97 in West Kelowna on two separate dates.

RCMP tell Castanet that both incidents are "very concerning."

The first occurred on Sept. 28 at 9:45 p.m., when a couple were driving near Grizzly Road.

“The object did hit our vehicle, causing damages,” said a man who only wants to be identified as Chuck.

“It was a dangerous prank,” he said.

A second incident occurred on Saturday, about the same time, near Daimler Road. The incident was captured on dash-cam and shows a person throwing on object directly at the moving truck.

“I saw somebody maybe 50 metres up the road, it looked like they were trying to cross the highway, they wound up and hit my truck,” said Scott Paynton.

Paynton believes the object could have been a pop or beer can.

“It sprayed liquid all over the truck,” he said. “He threw it pretty hard. If it hit any of the bodywork, it would have dented it.”

Paynton said he saw one person in the ditch and watched two people run across the road.

Chuck’s vehicle had $1,000 damage to the roof, above the passenger side.

“It was heavy enough that it bent and damaged the metal on the roof,” he said.

He added the object could have come through the windshield and would have caused him to swerve.

“It could have been serious,” he said.

“Such a crime being committed by a suspect, aimed at damaging vehicles travelling at highway speeds, has the real potential of seriously injuring and perhaps even killing someone,” said RCMP Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.

Anyone who witnessed the incidents is encouraged to contact RCMP.
