Flings can at moving truck

Alanna Kelly

A couple were driving along Highway 97 in West Kelowna on a quiet Saturday night when something hit their vehicle.

Scott Paynton and his fiancé were startled by the object and confused where it came from.

Dash-cam footage from the incident shows an object being flung at the truck from the side of the road and a loud thud can be heard on the video, followed by a woman asking ‘what was that?’

“I saw somebody maybe 50 metres up the road, it looked like they were trying to cross the highway, they wound up and hit my truck,” said Paynton.

He’s not sure what the object was, but thinks it could have been a pop can or beer can.

“It sprayed liquid all over the truck,” he said. “He threw it pretty hard. If it hit any of the bodywork, it would have dented it.”

Paynton and his fiancé pulled over to the side of the road to watch and see if the two people would throw something at another vehicle.

“There was a second person hiding in the ditch when I slowed down… there was two of them running across the road into the car dealership,” he said.

Thankfully, no one was hurt and his truck wasn’t damaged.

“If they had thrown it up higher, it could have smashed the window, it had the potential to hurt somebody,” he said.

Paynton said he thinks it was just kids misbehaving.

“Someone could have swerved, lost control, hit another vehicle and hit the friend on the side of the road,” he said.

Castanet reached out to RCMP to find out if other similar incidents have been reported.
