Spike strip halts police chase

A woman is in custody after leading Penticton RCMP on a police chase through West Bench and onto the Penticton Indian Band reserve.

Officers spotted a stolen pick-up travelling south on Highway 97 near Red Wing Tuesday at 2 p.m. and attempted to stop the vehicle with spike strips. The driver was, however, able to avoid police and drove up into West Bench, according to RCMP.

Police then set a trap, successfully deploying another set of spike strips in front of the vehicle that had now made its way onto the PIB reserve.

“Due to the truck being built to withstand tough driving conditions, the driver was able to continue driving, at slow speeds, up Green Mountain Rd. After a few kilometres, the driver wasn’t able to continue, and our officers coordinated the safe apprehension of the 24-year-old female driver,” said Const. James Grandy.

The woman is facing charges of possession of stolen property over $5,000, flight from police, possession of a controlled substance and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and should appear in court Thursday.

“The Penticton South Okanagan Similkameen Regional Detachment continues its commitment to safer homes and communities through solid teamwork and flexible coordination of resources,” added Grandy.
