Book dives deep into lake

A Kelowna author's new book takes a look at Okanagan lake – from above and below.

Author and researcher Raphael Nowak recently completed a degree in freshwater science at UBC Okanagan and has been avidly studying the science and history of Okanagan Lake for nearly 15 years.

Nowak’s book, Okanagan Lake: An Illustrated Exploration Above and Below the Waters, was a “tremendous amount of work,” he says, “but I am pleased to be able to share my findings and passion with others.”

The 272-page book covers subjects such as the science, history, and environmental aspects of the lake, including a chapter on underwater research in the deepest regions of the lake.

Many of the discoveries were made possible with underwater equipment created by Nowak, including remotely operated vehicles, sonar, and camera rigs.

From the earliest steamboats, to the William R. Bennett Bridge and the legend of Ogopogo, Nowak leaves no stone unturned.

Nowak will be signing copies at Mosaic Books in Kelowna on Oct. 27, from 1 to 3 p.m.
