Ferries finally get debit

BC Ferries is finally sailing into the 21st century.

The Crown corporation confirms it is testing Interac debit payments on the busy Swartz Bay-Tsawwassen route.

The trial will last two months before further consideration of expanding the service. Previously, ferry-goers could only use cash or credit cards.

Debit payments were available on the Spirit of British Columbia Wednesday, and will be on all vessels on that route by Thursday.

BC Ferries says improved WiFi connectivity at sea has made the difference.

Foot passengers can already pay by debit at BC Ferries terminals, but drivers can only pay by credit or cash, to speed up boarding.

"Unfortunately no debit at vehicle booths. Tap & Go has a $100 transaction limit & anything over would be required to enter PIN #," the company tweeted.
