'Killing animals has to stop'

Diana Bertucci is fed up with the killing of "innocent animals" in West Kelowna.

Bertucci is upset after watching a man killing Canada Geese on property across from the Cove Lakeshore Resort.

It's the same area she saw the same man killing geese back in February.

"My girlfriend was walking with her child and saw him shooting these animals, chasing them down and shooting them again, and again," she said.

"I saw him (February) shooting them and ripping their heads off with his hands.

"It's horrifying. This is not right."

Bertucci also reached out to Castanet News in February. Several agencies were contacted for comment at the time.

Andrea Norris, a migratory bird management biologist with Environment Canada, said at the time permits can be granted when bird activities result in an economic loss to the land owner due to spoiled crops, the cost of cleaning goose droppings or expenses of turf management, among other things.

Bertucci is upset about the public nature of the killings.

"He's shooting animals in a public area. There's a park just across the field from him. Who's to know that bullet doesn't miss a goose and go into somebody's dog or child.

"We shouldn't have to witness people shooting innocent animals, chasing them down and then shooting them over and over again until they're dead and then pulling their heads off."

If you want to kill, she says at least go somewhere where people can't see you doing it.

She said she contacted the government when this happened before, and was told the man had a license to do what he is doing.

"He may have a license," she said, "but does that make it OK to do it in front of people?"
