Dog gets into pot on ferry

A Vancouver Island woman says her dog got into some discarded marijuana on a ferry from Vancouver to Victoria and went into seizures.

Alyx Speth says she was in the pet-designated area below deck with her French bulldog, Leon, earlier this month when the incident occurred.

The dog sniffed out some pot left on the deck and ate it before she could stop him.

"He started having seizures and tremors, and his eyes were rolling back in his head," Speth told CTV. "I was bawling my eyes out. I thought he was going to die."

When the ferry docked, she took her pet to a vet, and was left with an almost $1,000 bill. She's considering legal action to cover the cost.

THC, the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis, can be toxic to animals.

Speth is worried such incidents will become more common after recreational marijuana becomes legal in Canada on Oct. 17.

"I'm concerned that it's going to be everywhere and dogs are gonna ingest it, cats are gonna ingest it, and there's going to be fatalities," she said.
