A royal introduction

Future Vernon royalty will be introduced to the public Thursday.

Contestants to be the next Queen Silver Star will be on hand at the Schubert Centre at 7 p.m. Sept. 20.

Candidates for Queen Silver Star will take part in the Excellence Program, which is for young women between the ages of 15-18 years who reside within the North Okanagan - Vernon, Coldstream, Lavington, Lumby and Armstrong.

Candidates who join the program make long-lasting friendships, enhance their resume, obtain required graduation volunteer hours and have the opportunity to win scholarship money.

The young ladies chosen as Vernon Ambassadors spend their year travelling as Ambassadors for the City of Vernon.

They also attend a variety of events within the city.

The crowning of the new Queen and Princess Silver Star kicks off Vernon Winter Carnival: A Pirate’s Carnival – running Feb. 1-10.

The 2019 event will mark the 59th anniversary of Vernon Winter Carnival and the tradition of Queen and Princess Silver Star.

Vernon Winter Carnival is one of the largest events of its kind in Canada.

For approximately six months all candidates attend classes each week. Personal growth is encouraged and valuable skills gained through time spent on topics such as:

  • Financial Awareness
  • Hair Care
  • Health and Fitness
  • Local History
  • Interview Skills
  • Make up/Skin Care
  • Modelling & Deportment
  • Self Defence
  • Speech Craft
