Tornado sighting on cam

Alanna Kelly

It happens once every 10 years in British Columbia, and a woman captured the entire thing on video.

Wild weather northwest of Mission B.C., created the perfect storm for tornado like conditions on Sunday.

A B.C. woman was on Hayward Lake and captured the whirling clouds.

Matt MacDonald, Environment Canada meteorologist says the rotating clouds can be seen in the video.

“There was no funnel touching down to the earth, which meteorologists say is necessary for a tornado to be confirmed,” said MacDonald.

Meteorologists looked into the alleged tornado sighting and said a mix of heavy rain and lightning could have made for the perfect condition for a tornado to occur.

“We were able to pick up some rotation on the radar, which would suggest the possibility of a tornado,” he said.

Without visual confirmation and recorded damage, MacDonald says it is impossible to absolutely confirm it, but it is possible.

Environment Canada issued two severe thunderstorm warnings over the weekend for the area.

“We had numerous reports of hail, heavy downpours upwards of 25 to 30 millimetres an hour,” he said. Which is very excessive.”

Unstable weather is the main ingredient for tornados, and could have caused this rare sighting.

“On average for B.C., we get one tornado every 10 years,” he said.

This possible tornado sighting comes at the same time as a bizarre video taken by a BC Wildfire Service firefighter who captured a fire tornado.

The last one previous to this possible one was in Quesnel in 2016 and before that the last one was in 2008.
