Renters don't get a pass

Madison Erhardt

Boat renters on Lake Okanagan don't get a free pass when it comes to boat safety.

Law enforcement officers patrolling the lake say they aren't afraid to stop a group that aren't the official owners of the craft.

"In the case of a rental, the documentation that they should have onboard the boat is a standardized safety checklist that the renter has gone through with the customer," said patrol officer Phil Boissonneault.

"That checklist that they go through grants temporary competency to operate a boat in Canada just for the duration of the rental."

Maeg's BBQ Boats Rentals & Tours says rental safety is a top priority.

"If you rent our boat and you are taking it out for the two hour option, we get you to arrive a half an hour ahead of time. All of our staff have been thoroughly taught by us and transport Canada," Said owner Maegan Young.

"We also go out with the renter to the end of the marina because we can tell you everything, but until you are actually operating the boat you might have different questions," Young added.
