Red Cross, Y here to help

The Red Cross and YMCA are jumping in to help those impacted by wildfires burning across B.C.

The Red Cross has launched an appeal for donations as help is not only needed now, but need is expected to continue in the weeks and months ahead.

“More than 3,000 people have already been evacuated from their homes this summer, and there continues to be more than 560 wildfires burning across the province," says Kimberley Nemrava, Canadian Red Cross vice-president for B.C. and the Yukon.

"With the donations from generous Canadians, the Red Cross will help ensure people are cared for now and as they start their recovery.”

You donate online at www.redcross.ca or by calling 1-800-418-1111.

Meanwhile, YMCA branches across the province are opening their doors to evacuees.

The YMCA has 12 locations in Prince George, Kamloops, Victoria, Kelowna and the Lower Mainland.

“We invite evacuees to visit the YMCA ... to shower and clean up, rest in a safe space or take part in a drop-in program like basketball, fitness classes or swimming,” says spokesperson Amanda Alexander.

“We know that the province and many of B.C.’s children and families are in a state of emergency right now, and we welcome all people impacted by the wildfires to find refuge at the Y.”

Evacuees simply need to visit the YMCA with identification that includes their photo and home address to participate.
