Down safe from PRH roof

UPDATE 11:15 a.m.

Traffic is again flowing on Government Street in front of Penticton Regional Hospital, where a distressed man was on the roof of the under-construction tower.

The scene is now clear of police and construction workers are back on the job.

A post  on the Penticton Facebook page from a friend of the young man on the roof indicates he got down safely with the help of RCMP.

UPDATE: 9:55 a.m.

A police negotiator is now on the roof of Penticton Regional Hospital with a distraught man.

The man has been on the roof since last night and one point was seen to be throwing objects from the roof of the new tower that is under construction.

A uniformed RCMP officer can be seen sitting at one side of the roof, while the subject is sitting at the other side with his head in his hands.

UPDATE: 8:10 a.m.

RCMP has closed a section a Government Street between Carmi Road and Industrial Avenue to deal with the situation.

Witnesses report the distressed man has been on the roof since at least 3 a.m., or as early as midnight. Construction workers at the hospital job site have now been sent home.

ORIGINAL: 7:10 a.m.

There is a developing situation at Penticton Regional Hospital Friday morning.

Eyewitnesses tell Castanet that a person has been on the roof of the new section of the hospital that is under construction.

There have been numerous tips indicating the person has been throwing things from the roof overnight and a picture sent to us by an anonymous tipster now shows the person sitting on the edge of the building.

RCMP have been on scene all evening and appear to be waiting for a negotiator to arrive on scene.
