18,000 feral cats

There are an estimated 18,000 feral cats in the Central Okanagan.

And the Cool Cats Project wants to do something about it.

An art exhibit and adoption event on Saturday revealed the shocking statistic. The event was a partnership between Cool Arts Society and the Okanagan Cat Coalition.

The coalition assists by spaying and neutering cats, then re-homing or releasing them to live out their lives without perpetuating the overpopulation problem.

Members of Cool Arts, adults with developmental/diverse abilities, have created art using cats as a theme, in various mediums under the mentorship of local artists Lee Claremont, Sharilyn Kuehnel, Sarah Parsons, Potters Addict Ceramic Art Centre, and Rena Warren.

Their work is on display at the Rotary Centre for the Arts.

The art will also be shown at UBC Okanagan's FINA Gallery in September and at the BC SPCA's Kelowna branch in November.
