Hungry, furry thieves

Chantelle Deacon

They're not your typical thieves. These ones are a lot smaller, cuter and fluffier than most.

Vernon's Swan Lake Nurseryland has been the target.

Marmots have been spending their time filling up their stomachs with fresh local produce when Swan Lake Nurseryland staff have their backs turned.

"We've noticed a little bit of theft in our bulk fruit processing area," said Kirk Hughes, owner/manager, Swan Lake Nurseryland. "Once and a while we will see signs that someones been in there and in fact a furry little tail running away and we've noticed that someone has been running away with peaches."

"I called Wise Wildlife Control and said we've got a problem we think that you can help us with and they came out, set some traps and lo and behold we've trapped a couple of marmots that have been helping themselves to the fruit product here."

Hughes posted a couple of corky videos about the marmots to the Swan Lake Nurseryland Facebook page which caught the attention of hundreds of people.

"They would just come in and help themselves to a peach here and run away and of course you can't catch them because they're fast."

Hughes doesn't blame the marmots for choosing to eat Swan Lake Nurseryland produce.

"It's good for them because they know where to come to get good quality fruit from," he laughed.

The marmots have been relocated to Coldstream Ranch.
