Mystery stink tracked down

Utility workers have managed to track down the source of a mysterious gas-like odour that's been lingering in a Calgary Dairy Queen restaurant for about three years.

Owner Sujad Bandali issued a call earlier this week for anyone who could identify the foul smell that's been plaguing the business.

Crews from Atco and the Calgary Fire Department tested the air several times but couldn't find any problem.

Frustrated, Bandali turned to social media, offering free Blizzards every week for a year to any person who could locate the stink.

A renewed search by an Atco team tracked the problem to a natural gas leak near one of the entrances that was only discovered when all the restaurant's vents and equipment were shut down.

Team members declined Bandali's tasty reward, so he will be making donations to the Children’s Miracle Network throughout the year to say thanks.

"Only a few people could smell it. It was the weirdest thing," said Bandali. "I can smell burgers and fries now. I can't express my happiness it's resolved, and it's safe. I don’t want anybody to have the wrong impression."
