Close call on Knox

Madison Erhardt

UPDATE 7:50 p.m.

The quick action from a resident along Stoneypointe Court in Kelowna, helped douse a fire spreading fast on Knox Mountain just before 5 p.m.

"It grew a lot. In the few minutes I was back there 'til they got there it went from half the size of this cul-de-sac to the full size going up the trees," the resident said.

The homeowner on Stoneypointe Court saw smoke from her backyard on top of Knox and ran out with a fire extinguisher.

"I did what I could do. I stomped it with my feet several times, and once fire crews got there I gave them directions to exactly where the fire was," she said.

Residents in the area said the quick action from fire crews was amazing.

"Excellent response to the crews. They were fast and in here and detail oriented. They moved us out to move the helicopters in and they were motivated. Good mop-up from the guys," a neighbour said.

Platoon captain Steve Roshinsky says the cause of the fire has not been determined. The Kelowna Fire Department and RCMP are both investigating.

Fire crews and BC Wildfire remind the public to report a suspected fire as soon as possible to 1-800 663-5555 or *5555 on a cell.

UPDATE: 5:10 p.m.

Crews with the Kelowna Fire Department have knocked down a potentially dangerous fire on Knox Mountain.

Firefighters were called about 4:30 Friday afternoon for a fire near Stoneypointe Court. Some homes were evacuated as a precaution.

The fire was initially burning in some trees, but was described later as a Rank 2 fire.

It grew to about 150 feet by 150 feet.

Fire crews are in mop up stage.

This was the second fire on Knox Mountain in three days. On Wednesday, neighbours grabbed garden hoses to douse a fire on Mount Royal Drive.

That fire was started by a spark from a garden tool.

The top half of Knox Mountain Drive has been closed to vehicle traffic due to dry conditions and a high risk of fire.

The terrain the fire is burning in has been described as "not too steep," and firefighters are hitting the blaze with water.

ORIGINAL: 4:40 p.m.

The Kelowna Fire Department is responding to a very active fire on Knox Mountain, and homes are being evacuated.

Early indications suggest the fire may be near the top of the mountain, off Stoneypointe Court.

The fire is about 100 feet by 100 feet, however, the fire is apparently high into the trees.

Heavy winds are also blowing in the area and a helicopter and a rappel crew have been called in to assist.

Fire crews have requested the help of RCMP to help with tactical evacuations of homes.

Castanet has a reporter heading to the scene.

We'll have more details when they become available.
