B.C.'s interior has officially entered wildfire season. The BC Wildfire Service has listed much of the Southern Interior at either a high or extreme danger rating.
With tinder-dry conditions comes the increased danger of spot fires popping up.
Just outside Merritt on Wednesday, a group of quick-thinking bystanders quickly extinguished a fire that was sparked by a tree that knocked down a power line.
The fire started 25 km east of Merritt on Highway 5 A near Aspen Grove.
Nick sent a video to Castanet.
"Luckily, a few of us (including the owners of Corbett Lake Lodge) were able to put the fire out using a fire extinguisher and water sprayer. It was a close call and could have turned into a large fire."
As a reminder, to report a wildfire or irresponsible behaviour call 1 800 663-5555 or *5555 from a cell phone. Information from the public is crucial to ensuring wildfires are responded to as soon as possible.
