Nine fire starts in region

Colton Davies

Nine of the 13 Okanagan fires sparked by lightning on Tuesday ignited in the South Okanagan and Similkameen, and the damage done is still being tallied.

The most significant of those nine fires is burning west of Summerland near Mount Conkle — the size being pegged at about 50 hectares by the BC Wildfire Service.

The Penticton Indian Band said Wednesday morning the fire was "mostly contained," but early in the afternoon the band said weather conditions made the fire fight more challenging.

Another three fires started just north of Naramata, all of which are believed to be relatively small.

One of those blazes started dangerously close to a home on North Naramata Road. Fortunately, it proved to be no more than a close call, as the local fire department stopped it less than 30 feet away from the nearest structure.

While the majority of Tuesday's fire activity occurred in the Okanagan, the Similkameen Valley wasn't spared of fires caused by lightning either.

BC Wildfire Service's map shows five fires were started during Tuesday evening's thunderstorm, one of those starting not far from a mobile home park in Olalla. A size estimate on those fires has not been provided.

Of all fires still burning in the region, none are threatening structures, the BC Wildfire Service said in an earlier update.
