Knox fire quickly doused

UPDATE:1:50 p.m.

The quick action of neighbours along Mount Royal Drive exstinguished a grass fire, metres from several homes Wednesday afternoon.

A group of residents tackled the fire with garden hoses and knocked it down before fire crews arrived.

A neighbour told Castanet a spark from a garden tool ignited the fire while a homeowner was working on their yard.

The Kelowna Fire Department put out remaining hot sports and neighbours have set up a sprinkler in the area.

UPDATE: 1:15 p.m.

The grass fire at the base of Knox Mountain has been extinguished, leaving behind a small charred area dangerously close to homes.

The fire was sparked earlier Wednesday, and residents used hoses to knock it down, before the Kelowna Fire Department arrived.

A sprinkler now sits on Mt. Royal Drive, keeping the area wet.

ORIGINAL: 12:50 p.m.

Amidst all the lightning-caused wildfires across the Okanagan, a grass fire has been sparked at the base of Knox Mountain Wednesday afternoon.

Several residents in the area are using hoses to battle the fire, off Mt. Royal Drive, and the flames appear very close to homes.

While the cause of the fire is not known at this time, the blaze appears to have been started beside the street.

It's unclear if emergency crews have made it to the blaze at this time.

Castanet's Madison Erhardt is heading to the scene and will have more details shortly.
