Choppers hitting wildfire

UPDATE 5:00 p.m.

The B.C. Wildfire Service says the small wildfire burning near Barcelo Canyon in the mountains above Keremeos is about a half hectare in size.

Fire information officer Marla Catherall says they have a three-person initial attack crew at the scene, supported by a pair of helicopters bucketing water onto the fire from the Similkameen River.

Tankers are also hitting the perimeter with retardant.

The fire is highly visible to both Cawston and Keremeos but is not threatening any homes, she said. High winds in the area have been stoking the fire, which remains classified as out-of-control.

ORIGINAL 3:00 p.m.

Aircraft with the B.C. Wildfire Service are attacking a small wildfire in the mountains above Keremeos near Barcelo Canyon.

Thunderstorms have been active in the area and local social media groups indicate a lighting strike took place around the same time the fire started.

The location of the fire makes it very visible to the village below. It is moving uphill and away from homes. The Keremeos volunteer fire department is also at the scene, according to an email notification from the municipality.

Castanet has reached out to the B.C. Wildfire Service for more information.
