Using the sun to tell time

Sundials may be gone, but they are not forgotten and Thursday a sundial will be unveiled at the Allan Brooks Nature Centre.

The ABNC teamed up with the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada – Vernon to build the first Analemmatic Sundial in the Greater Vernon area.

The RASC will unveil the sundial at 8 p.m. and will then break out the telescopes so the public can get look at the far reaches of the galaxy.

“Our members built the Analemmatic Sundial and glass mosaic artist Connie Vetter-Johnson created the numbered stones with the distinctive hawk centrepiece to show people the complexity of time and astronomy in an interactive, physical space,” said Jim Kanester with the RASC.

As opposed to normal sundials, Kanester said the ABNC one will correct for the motion of the earth as it travels around the sun.

This will allow for a more accurate telling of the time.

“Interactive displays like the Analemmatic Sundial allows one to not only experience Earth's shifting axis, but also the opportunity to take time and reflect in nature,” said Aaron Deans, ABNC executive director.

The ABNC provides visitors a first-hand opportunity to see and learn about the Okanagan's unique and diverse natural heritage through views, information, programs and displays of the region's natural areas.
