Film features local athlete

Two local filmmakers are shining a spotlight on a Kelowna CrossFit athlete who's ranked as the second best in the world.

On the heels of Sam Finlay and Tyler Hinds' local hockey documentary series released last winter, the pair have teamed up again to document Brent Fikowski's road to the CrossFit Games in Wisconsin in August. The Games invite the best CrossFit athletes from around the world.

Fikowski has made it to the Games the last two years, placing fourth in 2016 and second last year. He has now qualified for the 2018 world Games.

Hinds and Finlay joined Fikowski at the West Regionals in San Diego in May where he placed first. The first episode of the documentary series, released Tuesday, introduces Fikowski, and pokes fun at how he is relatively unknown to those outside of the CrossFit community, despite being one of the best in the world.

When he's not training and competing around the world, he continues to work as an accountant in downtown Kelowna at Strawhouse, a local tech company.

In addition to Fikowski, the film also shows off Kelowna's natural beauty.

The filmmakers also travelled to Lethbridge, Fikowski's hometown, to talk with his family and friends he grew up with. They've also interviewed some of Fikowski's training partners at Kelowna CrossFit, where he trains.

The first of five episodes was released Tuesday. The next two will be released prior to the Games in August, while the final two will document Fikowski's time in Wisconsin.

“We're in the stage where he's doing his intense training before the Games, and we'll see how he does in Madison at the beginning of August,” said Hinds.

The documentary is funded by Telus, which funded Hinds and Finlay's previous documentary series. Hinds says they're looking at working on a future project about Team Canada's World Junior hockey team this winter.

The first episode of All In: A Brent Fikowski Documentary has garnered more than 20,000 views on YouTube after just one day.
