TransLink fare shakeup?

Transit riders in Metro Vancouver could soon pay by distance travelled instead of TransLink's current three-zone fare system.

TransLink is pondering the switch, and says the new system would apply to SkyTrain, SeaBus and any future rapid rail projects. Bus fares would remain as is, however.

The proposed maximum fare under the proposal would be the same as the current three-zone fare, meaning those who commute farthest wouldn't have to pay more.

TransLink consultations that garnered more than 55,000 responses found "the high price of short trips across a zone boundary, steep price jumps across a zone boundary, and the arbitrariness of zone boundaries," were among the top complaints among riders.

The transit provider says the changes are intended to be revenue neutral. It estimates about two-thirds of riders will pay about the same as they do now. Actual fare prices have yet to be announced.
