Golf championship tees off

UPDATE 1 p.m.

There's a two-way tie for the lead midway through the first round of the GolfBC Championship at Gallagher's Canyon.

Mark Anguiano of Bellflower, CA, and American Grady Brame Jr. torched the course in the opening round.

Both fired nine-under par 62s as part of the morning wave Thursday.

They're two shots better than American Blake D. Trimble and four clear of four others.

Anguiano finished his round with nine birdies while Brame Jr. had seven birdies and an eagle on number nine. He birdied the 18th to join Anguiano, who had finished a few groups earlier.

Calgary's Jared du Toit is the top Canadian. He's in a large group at four-under par late in his opening round.

Du Toit carved up the course last year in the third round when he fired a course-record 10-under 61.

The field of 156 will be trimmed to the top 60 and ties following Friday's second round.

The championship wraps up Sunday afternoon.

ORIGINAL 10 a.m.

The GolfBC Championship teed off earlier this morning at Gallagher's Canyon Golf and Country Club in Kelowna.

The event is the third stop on the Mackenzie Tour PGA Tour Canada.

The 156 man field does not include the defending champion. Robbie Shelton of Mobile Ala., who won the event by a single shot in 2017, has moved on to the Web.com Tour, one step below the PGA Tour.

The field includes Sam Fidone and Jordan Niebrugge who won the opening two events of the season in Victoria and Vancouver.

Four Kelowna golfers are also teeing it up this week, including Matt Hopley who's making his second start at the event, Finlay Young, Garrett Kucher and Conner Kozak.

The field will be trimmer to the low 60 and ties after the second round Friday.

Tickets for the event are still available at the tournament website, or at the course.
