Two wildfires growing

UPDATE 8:12 a.m.

Two wildfires in the Kamloops Wildfire Region are growing in size and both appear to have been human-caused.

Information posted on the BC Wildfire website states the Xusum Creek fire is roughly 25 hectares, while the larger of the two, the Allie Lake fire is now 60 hectares.

An evacuation alert has been issued for residents living closed to the Xusum Creek fire, which is approximately 35 km west of Lillooet.

The Allie Lake fire is near the perimeter of the 2017 Elephant Hill fire. Smoke from that fire is visible from several communities throughout the region.

UPDATE: 9 p.m. May 23, 2018

A wildfire at Avery Hill, about 55 kilometres northwest of Kamloops is burning out of control Wednesday.

Fire information officer Brenna Ward said the fire is estimated to be 60 hectares and is rank 3 and 4.

"Some candling along the perimeter and short range spotting," she said. "Not necessarily getting into the top of the trees but is still fairly active."

No structures are being threatened but the location is very close to one of the largest wildfires in 2017.

“The Avery Hill fire is located near the site of the 2017 Elephant Hill Fire,” she said.

Numerous local residents contact BC Wildfire Service Wednesday afternoon after seeing lots of smoke.

“The fire is producing a significant amount of smoke," said Ward. "We did receive several calls from local residents this afternoon about the fire because how much smoke it is producing.”
