Man saved from Fraser River

A man was rescued from the middle of the Fraser River on Thursday morning near New Westminster.

New West Police were called to the scene at 6 a.m.

Three Marine Unit officers quickly located the man and pulled him to safety.

Sgt. Greg Smith said the man appeared to be hypothermic, and they were lucky to get to him as soon as they did.

“The temperature of the Fraser River at this time of year is very cold due to the snow melt,” Sgt. Jeff Scott said in a news release. “This could have ended in tragedy had it not been for the quick response of those members involved, and their ability to successfully perform these rescues in highly stressful situations.”

The man was taken by ambulance after being brought to shore. His current condition is unknown.

No foul play is suspected, and police are investigating how the man ended up in the river.
