Police nab burglar

A series of Osoyoos break-and-enters in March and early April have led to an arrest and conviction, according to Osoyoos RCMP.

Scott Andrew Paquette, 51, was accused of several thefts from recreational trailers and motorhomes on Lakeshore Drive in Osoyoos after he was caught unlawfully in a trailer there on April 7.

He attended court on April 23 and was sentenced to 120 days in jail followed by 18 months probation.

The Osoyoos RCMP are also warning the public of other potential threats to belongings and personal safety.

Phone and internet scam attempts have been popping up in the area this past week. One claims the victim owes taxes to the government and that a warrant has been issued for their arrest, threatening to go through with that if personal details and payment are not provided.

Police say no information or money should be provided, and remind the public to call them or a government agency if they find a call suspicious.

A second phone scam circulating claims a loved one has been arrested, and that bail must be paid for their release. In one instance, the fraudster used a phone spoofing app to make the call appear to come from a relative's phone. The RCMP say bail can be paid in person at the local court house or police station in cases of doubt.

RCMP also wish to remind the public of bicycle safety, now that the weather is warming up. Drivers should watch for cyclists, and cyclists should adhere to vehicle laws, dismount to cross the road, wear a helmet and reflective clothing at night and make eye contact with drivers.
