Rifles drawn downtown

An employee working along Water Street in Kelowna came out of their business at 11:45 p.m. Wednesday night to find numerous police officers with their guns drawn.

“There were a bunch of cop cars with their lights off parked on the road,” she said. “I walked to my car, which was on Lawrence Avenue and there were three cops with huge rifles (held at) their chests.”

Police officers were seen inside the Chapman parkade with their guns pointing down Lawrence Avenue.

The woman said the police were all looking towards the Liquid Zoo.

“Nobody said anything. The cops were all stone faced and just looking down the road. It was super creepy,” she said.

Kelowna RCMP tell Castanet they were called to assist Penticton RCMP in locating and apprehending a male believed to be distraught and in possession of a firearm.

“Just before midnight officers located the man's vehicle in the 200 block of Lawrence Avenue,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.

Police officers quickly set up a perimeter in the area and found his vehicle, but the man was not inside.

Instead, he was inside a local establishment.

“Plain clothes officers entered the establishment and safely apprehended the man without incident,” said O’Donaghey.

The man was taken to hospital for a full assessment.

An investigation is ongoing, and being led by Penticton RCMP.
