Bikes to bras at VPD auction

Bicycles, bras, jewelry and even diapers are up for grabs at the Vancouver Police Department's annual recovered goods auction.

The stolen items will on the block at Able Auctions in Surrey on Saturday.

Among the higher end items are a Rolex watch worth $13,000 and many musical instruments.

Power tools, toothbrushes and laundry pods fill out the more common goods. And, as always, hundreds of bicycles.

Most of the items up for bids were shoplifted.

"Other items are found property that either we found or members of the public have found," Const. Anne-Marie Clark told CTV.

Shoplifting is a big problem, rivalling the drug trade. Front men known as "fences" seek out the vulnerable, often drug addicts, and pay them 10 cents on the dollar for shoplifted goods. They're often given free drugs to keep them stealing.

Police estimate up to $50,000 worth of stolen goods is exchanged on East Hastings Street every day.
