When will the pier open?

The damage to Kalamalka Rotary Pier from last spring has not been fixed.

Heavy winds and high water from flooding weakened the pier to the point the District of Coldstream was forced to close it for the busy summer season.

"We are trying to push it along as quickly as we can," says Trevor Seibel, chief administrative officer for the District of Coldstream. "We know it is a popular item but that being said we don't want to rush it. We want to ensure we do it properly."

Seibel says they are waiting on the condition assessment before taking the next step.

"The wharf was a regional district-owned asset. It is their insurance that is covering the work that has been done," says Seibel."We are in the process of waiting for a report on the structural assessment, the pilings and the work that needs to be done."

Once the district receives the report it can determine the necessary work needed to fix it.

The assessment work was delayed due to the extended winter.

"Divers were needed to be brought in to look at the pilings, with the lake being frozen longer ... it prevented them from getting in to do the work."

That work has been done as part of the assessment.

Kal Beach is one of the most popular beaches in the North Okanagan, especially with younger people.

The pier has been a sore spot for people wondering when it will finally get fixed.
